Gareth Smyth was the Tehran bureau chief for The Financial Times for four years. He has lived in the Middle East since 1996. He has covered Iraqi politics – especially Kurdistan – since the early 1990’s, was based in northern Iraq during the 2003 war and had done several stints in post-Saddam Iraq including Baghdad, Najaf and Basra. Gareth was previously based in Lebanon, where he covered the Israeli withdrawal under fire in 2000 and the succession of Bashar al-Assad to the Syrian presidency. In 2005 he was nominated by the FT as ‘foreign correspondent of the year’ in the British press awards.
